In first of its case of animal euthanasia, a paralytic bear named 'chotu' was euthanized at Indore zoo. The process was carried out by ARPF's Indore zoo branch director Rakesh yadav who also is the zoo keeper at Indore. Complete protocol was conducted by ARPF team at Indore right from his last day monitoring to his post mortem and burial.

ARPF - Indore has been working from past 3 years at Indore zoo on various ex situ conservation activities. It was along with ARPF team that the Zoo management had taken the decision to euthanize the bear in august by writing a requesting letter to CZA for permission to carry the procedure. The bear which has crossed his average lifespan was suffering from maggot wounds and bed sores from past 3 years post paralytic attack and was continuously monitored and treated everyday by zoo authorities.

While the procedure was painless for the bear, it was a very painful moment for everyone present on site carrying out the procedure. ARPF team has also decided to celebrate bear day in chotu's memory and will now be constructing an educational arena near his grave site for public to visit and learn about his journey and conservation status of bears in India!

We will miss you Chotu!
